Sayona Québec restarts North American Lithium project

Abitibi-Témiscamingue may be known first and foremost for the precious mineral found in its subsoil, but there’s much more to its mining industry than that. Many new projects are part of the development of the battery sector.

For example, on March 30, Lacorne-based Sayona Québec restarted its North American Lithium (NAL) project, the outcome of considerable investment and process optimization efforts. Since then, it has been the only company on the continent to produce spodumene concentrate, a lithium silicate, for customers such as LG Chem and Tesla.

As the demand for lithium batteries continues to grow – particularly to supply the automotive market –

The start-up of production at the NAL mine marks Abitibi’s return to the energy transition supply chain.

Sayona also submitted a feasibility study in April,

which includes the Authier mine project, also located in the region.

Other projects underway or under study in Quebec include Nemaska Lithium’s Whabouchi mine and Patriot Battery Metals’ Corvette project, both located in James Bay.
