Too many companies do not have innovation projects

As the Innovation Council website indicates, from August to December 2020, Mr. Luc Sirois was a strategic advisor to the Quebec Minister of Economy and Innovation, to lead the redesign and creation of a new model for the valorization of public research. He was then named Quebec’s Chief Innovator, becoming the first to hold this position in Quebec.

In the January article by journalist Stéphane Roland (La Presse Canadienne) entitled Trop d’entreprises n’ont pas de projets d’innovation, Mr. Sirois tells us that too many Quebec entrepreneurs feel they don’t need to innovate because their recipe “works well”.

The article in question lists several statistics from a report by the Quebec Innovation Council based on a survey by the Léger polling firm. Among other things, that only half of the companies (51%) had an innovation project in the pipeline during the period from February 2021 to February 2022.

One of the causes of this delay, according to the Quebec Innovation Council report, is the lack of familiarity of business leaders with the main federal and provincial economic development agencies. It must be said that they often do not know which door to knock on to set in motion the development of innovative solutions.

If so many Quebec entrepreneurs are not interested in innovation, it is not because they lack ideas – quite the contrary – but mainly because they lack the support to bring them to fruition. The problem is even more acute in a region like ours, where the collaborative culture has not yet taken firm root and innovative economic development resources are less readily available.
